Vanessa Morgan is calling out the hit show Riverdale for its portrayal of black characters, as well as stating that she gets paid less than her white co-stars.
The 28-year-old actress who has played main-cast member Toni Topaz on the teen drama Riverdale since season 2, took to Twitter to write, "Tired of how black people are portrayed in the media, tired of us being portrayed as thugs, dangerous or angry scary people."
"Tired of us also being used as side kick non dimensional characters to our white leads," she continued, strongly hinting at her experience being the only black main cast member on Riverdale.
Aside from being the only black lead, Vanessa's character is also bi-sexual, with Twitter user @oneofthosefaces pointing out in a tweet, "imagine they're getting so much more bang for their buck bc ur part of an lgbt storyline too, double the diversity - DOUBLE UR PAYCHECK IMO"
However, Vanessa replied to the user writing, "Lmao too bad I’m the only black series regular but also paid the least 😂👏🏽 girl I could go on for days 🐸 " and included, "But exactly, used as the token biracial bisexual."
Asha Bromfield, who played Melody Jones on Riverdale, showed her support by writing, "We had so much more to contribute than standing in the background and adding sass to a storyline. I stand with you."
Vanessa also made a point of tweeting, "my role on Riverdale has nothing to do with my fellow castmates/friends. They don't write the show. So no need to attack them, they don't call the shots and I know they have my back." Riverdale star Lili Reinhart reached out by writing, "We love you, V. And support you 10000%.
