Take one look at the 2022 Autumn-Winter runways, and one thing is abundantly clear - face crystals are back. While Euphoria has undoubtedly made them popular for a while, the 90's trend has, until now, not yet made its official fashion week debut. And you know the drill, once the runway says it's on-trend, we follow obediently. Get those crystal sheets out, and allow us to guide you through this loveable beauty trend!
Donni Davy, the guru behind the Euphoria cast's makeup looks, has long been credited for the rhinestone trend comeback as the characters rock a range of crystal looks throughout the show. "I think the key to this trend's popularity is really simple. Crystals are decorative and they sparkle, and when you put them on your face you tend to feel a little magical and extraordinary. In the past, rhinestones were more associated with people who perform on stage and wear extravagant costumes, but normalizing the rhinestone also normalizes unapologetic self-celebration," Davy explained. In response, she launched her own beauty brand Half Magic, channeling these looks.
The crystal runway looks this season were not holding back. Designer Simone Rocha had her models adorned with thick crystal designs around their eyes, representing a mask of sorts. Koche also channeled the trend, applying crystals to their models' lips. Overall, it was clear a new-age glamour had been brought to a beloved nineties trend!
Feeling overwhelmed? Luckily Davy is on hand to provide her expert advice. In terms of its application, she recommends applying them to non-oily or greasy skin. If you know you want to wear them, avoid oily skincare products in the day leading up. If applying them on top of color, use long-wear liquid eyeshadows for the base. Some rhinestones will need to be applied with eyelash glue and tweezers, but Davy's crystals are stuck on! How far you go with this trend is up to you! You can try a minimal approach with one or two rhinestones or go all out and light up the room. Davy notes her favorite understated look is a few small stones spaced out on the lower lash line. Spice things up by using a range of gem sizes or create a 'liner' with the rocks on the upper lash line. Dark burgundy or purple is perfect for this. Get bedazzling!
