Coming up with a skincare routine can be overwhelming. From celebrity skincare routine videos to get ready with me videos on TikTok, everyone seems to have a 20-step routine filled with all sorts of different products and treatments. And while the attention to taking care of our skin is definitely a huge plus (go us!), this latest trend, skin streaming, takes a more simplistic approach.

Skin streaming encourages you to create a minimalistic skincare routine. In this approach, quality is in mind over quantity. Dr. Kunal Malik, MD, a board-certified general and cosmetic dermatologist, told Popsugar, “Skin streaming is a trend that refers to streamlining skin care to use fewer products that effectively fulfill multiple needs, rather than using a drawer full of single-purpose-only products.” Instead of slathering your face with a bunch of different products, this approach wants you to build a routine that has only a few steps and uses products that have proven skin benefits. We’re talking about essentials only! So, what products should be included in this parred down routine? A typical routine should consist of a cleanser, a serum, an eye cream (if wanted), moisturizer, SPF in the morning, and retinol at night.

Dr. Purvisha Patel, MD, a board-certified dermatologist, told The Zoe Report, “Choosing products that protect the skin, prevent damage, and help to reverse signs of aging are all still fitting in a simplified routine.” Skincare routines that include a large range of products can actually irritate the skin instead of helping it. Think about it – if you are layering active ingredients on top of each other, they have the potential to deactivate each other’s benefits. Having a simple routine with only a few active ingredients reduces these chances. Another major plus that we haven’t even mentioned is all the money you could save by simplifying your routine. If you’re trying skin streaming, don’t fret if you see some side effects. There’s a chance that your skin may feel oily or dry, but your skin will eventually adapt.

There are many reasons to adopt a more simplistic routine. Sometimes, less is more! Who else is ready to try skin streaming in their daily skincare routine?
