TBT to when beach waves and long hair were all the rage amongst celebrities like Blake Lively and influencers like Negin Mirsalehi. But, just like in fashion, with each passing year, newer styles seem to take over. And this year, it looks like the boyfriend bob is what everyone and their mother will be obsessing over. Here's everything you need to know about the cool-girl haircut.
Whether it's Kaia Gerber, Kourtney Kardashian, or Dua Lipa, stars have definitely proven that the bob can be a modern and sexy look. It's clearly becoming very popular, but don't just take our word for it. According to Glamour magazine, this type of cut was the most searched on the internet, with an average of 222,580 monthly searches! Just for reference, the second place went to buns that got roughly 85,890 average monthly searches. But before you go running to grab the scissors in your bathroom, let's discuss the type of bob cut we're talking about - because not all of them can give off the same look.
The boyfriend bob is more of a blunt cut. "Think of it as a square-outlined, shorter, blockier bob," explained the U.K. editorial ambassador for L'Oréal Professionnel, Adam Reed. "It's so flattering, wearable, and totally changeable depending on your personal style." The reason it's probably in such high demand right now is that it's so versatile. It can be styled in a clean-cut, sleek way or be given a messier, grungy type of look.
To achieve the first look, Reed recommends using a good serum to ensure no frizz occurs throughout the day. And of course, for those with naturally wavy hair, straighten the strands to really give that full sleek effect. But if you want to add some texture to the hair, the hairstylist suggests applying root-boosting dust at the roots to give extra volume: simply bring the product all the way down to the ends to provide texture and beach waves (because, let's be real, they are probably never gonna go out of style). "Have a conversation with your stylist, and they will be able to guide what will suit you best, taking into consideration your face shape, how you style day to day, and so on," he noted. "If you have an image in mind, then a photo is always helpful too." Check out Reed's Instagram for more tips!
