Makeup is constantly evolving and changing, from how we put it on to which products we use. There’s always something new happening in the industry, and purple blush is one of the latest trends people have been trying out. Here’s why you have to join the purple blush train.

Purple is a beloved color and has a rich history. Way, way back in ancient times, the color was reserved only for royalty because of its rarity. Nowadays, the color has become a hit as a blush - after all, it's a universally flattering color. How does it do it? It’s all about the color wheel. Yup, that thing we all learned about in art class in elementary school. Purple sits opposite yellow on the color wheel, and according to makeup artist Tobi Henney, this is why it has a brightening effect on the face. How cool is that? To dive even deeper into color theory, our skin tones range from yellow-orange to red on the color wheel. Since their counterparts are purple or blue-violet, they make each other more robust when used together. So, the makeup pops more!

Knowing where to begin can be overwhelming - that’s why we’re here to help. For those with a lighter skin tone, lilac and pastel purples are the way to go. These shades won’t overwhelm your skin. Those with more of a medium tan skin tone with gold or olive undertones should opt for deeper hues of purple. The best shades on them are more in the berry or fuchsia families. Lastly, those who want to try out this trend and have deep skin tones can go straight for the true purples. What’s the best way to style purple blush? Makeup artist Jamie Greenberg told Byrdie, “With purple blush, I find it’s best to keep things more on the neutral side since the blush will be the star of the show.”

Another makeup artist, Tobi Henney, differed in her stance. She said, “I love teaming up purple blush with fun eyeshadow – mattes and metallics in cool tones always look great paired with purple blush.” The world is yours with purple blush!
