From an island girl to a Grammy winner to a successful businesswoman, Rihanna's evolution is inspiring. Let's go back to the beginning and look at how Rihanna became one of the world's biggest celebrities.

Barbados Girl

While the world simply knows her by her middle name, there is much more to Rihanna than meets the eye. She was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty on the island of Barbados in 1988 and was destined to become a star.

She was born to Monica and Ronald Fenty and has two brothers, two half-sisters, and one half-brother. Her childhood wasn't exactly picture-perfect. She struggled with chronic migraines and problems at home. Her parents ended up divorcing when she was 14. In one more year, her life would change entirely.

The Big Audition

Rihanna formed a band with two of her classmates. They didn't even have a band name or an original song. Still, they landed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to audition for record producer Evan Rogers while he was visiting Barbados. Rogers worked with stars like Christina Aguilera and American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson.

Rogers knew there was something different about her. According to Entertainment Weekly, he said, "The minute Rihanna walked into the room, it was like the other two girls didn't exist. She carried herself like a star even when she was 15. But the killer was when she opened her mouth to sing."

After her epic audition, Rogers invited Rihanna to the United States so she could record a demo tape. Rihanna and her mother traveled back and forth for a year until she eventually moved in with Rogers and his wife to make her dream happen. Rihanna said about leaving her home, "When I left Barbados, I didn't look back."

Her completed tape was sent to Def Jam Recordings, and none other than Jay-Z listened to it. Intrigued by her sound, the rapper invited Rihanna to the office. She made her way to New York City and performed for the executives at Def Jam. Rihanna left New York City that day with a record deal.

It featured songs like SOS, Unfaithful, and Break It Off.
