Miley Cyrus Gets Sentimental on Fourth Anniversary of 'Malibu' Release
| LAST UPDATE 05/12/2021
Remember that time Miley Cyrus made our hot girl summer a million times better with the release of Malibu? Well, it's officially been four years since her love anthem to Liam Hemsworth came out and the singer didn't hold back as she reminisced over the good ol' days.
Miley might've recently uploaded a TikTok making fun of her past relationships, but she put the humor aside for some simple sweet words this time. The singer took to the Gram in honor of the track's fourth anniversary; Malibu was released on May 11, 2017 and reached No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The love song was also the lead single to Cyrus's September 2017 album Younger Now.

The former Disney Channel star shared a throwback video from the studio in honor of the iconic song's drop. "Today is the 4 year anniversary of Malibu," Miley wrote alongside the clip of her working on the single back in 2017. "A song about a place and person that at the time I loved very much. That loves was reciprocated beyond what I could describe here with freedom & escapism."
Miley then mentioned her and Liam Hemsworth's Malibu home that was destroyed in the California wildfires a bit over a year after Malibu's release. "I lost that home along with many others in 2018. Here is a video of me writing it in my home studio," she shared.
It's no secret the starlet has fond memories of her time as a power couple with The Hunger Games actor. Last year Miley also commemorated the love song's anniversary on Insta. And in 2017, the Hollywood icon discussed with Billboard magazine why exactly she wrote the love song.
"They're going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with Liam," the singer said. "So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, 'This is how I feel'?" But as we all know, those feelings didn't last forever. When the lovebugs split in 2019, Cyrus released a different kind of song: a breakup anthem *cue Slide Away.* We might've been crying in the club over Miley and Liam's divorce, but at least we got that gem out of it.
