Miley's been hyping up her newest single, Midnight Sky, for quite a while on Instagram, and we've finally had a chance to hear it! The artist explained that the song was inspired by her ups and downs of the past year.

Miley wrote the incredible lyrics for her new song with the help of Ryan Tedder, Andrew Watt, and Louis Bell. This was the first time she's directed her own music video, so the project was an extra special one.

Midnight Sky has a powerful theme of freedom and empowerment, with standout lyrics like, "I was born to run, I don't belong to anyone... I don't need to be loved by you."

"It was just really important for me to be able to like really sit with my thoughts," Cyrus explained. She said that her experience writing and directing this video helped her let go of things she'd held onto for too long.

Miley added that the song isn't necessarily about her former marriage with Liam Hemsworth, but more about how the idea of divorce has impacted her. "I think it's my relationship with the stigma."

"That 'forever,' if it's not successful or if you claimed something to be forever, and then you fail, then you're a failure," she added. Miley's extremely excited to share her experiences with us through Midnight Sky, and we can't stop listening to it!
