Malu Trevejo just got signed by Travis Scott's label, Cactus Jack Records. So who is the 19-year-old taking the music world by storm? Here's everything you need to know about the rising star.
Malu was born in Cuba in 2002, and her family moved to Spain soon after. When Trevejo was 12 years old, they moved to Miami. But the young teen's time in Spain and Cuba would be a great inspiration for her future music career. And it wasn't long before that got started: a few years after getting to South Florida, Malu began posting on Musical.ly, the precursor of TikTok where users could make 1-minute lip-syncing videos.
"I posted a video of me dancing, and people liked it a lot, and they started reposting it," she recalled. "I started getting followers and doing more music videos of me dancing." Soon, her popularity spread to Insta. Malu currently boasts a whopping 10.6 million followers on the Gram and 22 million on TikTok, and her online presence soon caught the attention of record label iNtu. By September 2017, the aspiring artist released her debut track: Luna Llena.
At the time, Trevejo was still in school. But she dropped out when classmates started bullying her for her ambitions. "I can't be a normal teen, to be honest," Malu confessed. "If I want to sing, then I have to live this life. Sometimes I feel pressure because I can't do the things normal kids do, but I also feel super proud because I have all of these followers that listen to me."
So she left high school and gave her growing career her all - which paid off, as she's since been signed by Travis Scott. As Trevejo's popularity grew, so did interest in her personal life. Much to her fans' delight, Malu has been super open about her romances - drama and all. From when she dated hip hop artist YoungBoy to a brief fling with London rapper Central Cee - which Trevejo later exposed was done for clout - the singer details her love life on Instagram Live. The 19-year-old was also linked to renowned lightweight boxer Ryan Garcia last year.
But Malu's relationship scandals turned out to be the least of the singer's life drama. In 2020, Trevejo revealed recent news that had turned her world upside down: the man she thought was her dad wasn't. Her biological father was actually in prison in Cuba, with a sentence of 122 years, she confessed to fans.
From popping music and a rising net worth to plenty of scandals, we're sure there will only be more Malu coming out way.
