Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan Reveals "Easter Egg" in Penelope's First Scene
| LAST UPDATE 02/21/2021
It's been months since the popular series' release, but lucky for us, Bridgerton seems to be the gift that keeps on giving. Nicola Coughlan, who plays the one and only Penelope Featherton, just pointed out an "Easter Egg" in the show's first scene. Read on for the exciting details.
The Derry Girls actress took to social media and shared an exciting secret about the royal-inspired drama series. "Ok I'm just curious," Nicola started the tweet. "Has anyone spotted the massive Easter Egg about Penelope in the very first scene of Bidgerton?" Of course, there was no shortage of fans writing back to the actress with their best guesses.

Some followers suggested the series' hint was that the Featherington household appeared first, while others thought the bee that shows up on the screen might be the secret giveaway. But the real answer was something much more relevant to Penelope's double-identity. And one user was quick to figure it out.
When a fan tweeted back, "The quill?" Nicola responded, "Ding Ding Ding!!" The Bridgerton star explained, "I decided on a prop for the scene where you first see Penelope, that prop happened to be a giant feather that looked a lot like...a quill." Spoiler alert: the youngest Featherington child was revealed to be the one and only Lady Whistledown in the season one finale, making the feathery accessory a clever indication of the surprising twist.
But that's not the only hidden gem show-lovers have noticed since the release of the popular Netflix show. Special props and hints are all over the place. For example, the Duke of Hastings always sports an emerald and diamond-encrusted brooch, which attentive viewers noticed belonged to his late mother, as revealed in a flashback during season one.
Marina Thompson, played by Ruby Barker, wears a clue about her character's truth all along, as well. The young lady, who is secretly pregnant, often wears a "lover's eye" pendant. "That's just to symbolize that she has a lover that nobody knows about," explained John Glaser, a Bridgerton costume designer. We can't wait to look for more sneaky symbols in the next royal season.
