Leighton Meester's fans have seen the actress go from playing the spoiled, devious socialite on the teen drama series Gossip Girl to taking on more sinister roles, like Killer Movie's Rebecca Evans. And it looks like her next project will be just as spine-tingling!

The 35-year-old actress is set to star in new Netflix crime thriller, The Weekend Away, alongside The Royals star Christina Wolfe. The movie, an adaptation of Sarah Alderson's best-selling novel, portrays the story of two lifelong best friends, Beth (played by Meester) and Kate (portrayed by Wolfe). The two women decide to go on a trip to Croatia for the weekend to escape the struggles of their daily lives. But things go terribly wrong when Beth wakes up after a drunken night and realizes that Kate is nowhere to be found...

Beth is then burdened with the task of having to prove her innocence to authorities, who begin to investigate the mystery of Kate's disappearance. To make matters worse, her memory is still vague and distorted from the events of the previous night, making her mission even more challenging. As she retraces her steps, she unearths several distressing secrets that could potentially bring their many years of friendship to an abrupt end. In fact, she begins to uncover more information than she would ever want to know.

Leighton Meester appears to be really excited about taking on this complex role. In a press release, she commented on the complicated circumstances her character finds herself in, being a new mother who's also concerned for her best friend as she goes through a divorce. "Beth is in a stage of transition, in her friendships, career, motherhood, and marriage," the actress shared, mentioning that she had also read Sarah Alderson's book after filming had ended. "I was excited to try and capture that stage, which I'm navigating myself. The energy, mystery, and action was a huge draw, as I love the crime/thriller genre." And we're just as excited to share the adventure with her! Be sure to catch the premiere of the movie this March on Netflix!
