Lily Collins caused an uproar among fans when she stated that Emily in Paris's protagonist is a mere 22 years old. After listening to viewers' responses, the Hollywood star acknowledged the age prediction was likely wrong.
The controversy began after an interview with British Vogue was released. "I don't believe we've ever given her a specific 'number' for her age, but I believe that she's pretty fresh out of college," the actress told the magazine. "Maybe this is her first year after graduation. I want to say she's like, 22-ish."
Viewers of the show were quick to pull out their receipts and explain why it was nearly impossible that the titular character is so young. Fans pointed out the protagonist's various references to her master's degree in communications, meaning she is definitely not "Fresh out of college."
People also thought Emily's job title was not one given to a recent graduate. The celebrity later posted an Instagram story where she retracted her statement. "Emily looking at me when I get her age wrong. Sorry girl," Collins wrote next to a GIF of a shocked-looking Em.
The starlet wasn't the only one to weigh in on the matter. Following the controversy, Lily's co-star Lucas Bravo shared his thoughts. "I would say she's probably 24," he said. "I feel like she's still very strong-willed and she has certainties, but yeah I would say [that she is] around 24."
But among the critics of the age theory were some who agreed with the initial commentary. Supporters thought the character's young age explained a lot about the naïve way Emily approached her life in Paris. Guess we'll wait and see if a season 2 will settle the debate!
