For a while now, Hollywood has tried to create a live-action movie about the iconic doll, Barbie. And after facing a few setbacks, the movie is finally on its way to us! It's even been described as "the thing you didn't know you wanted" by the lead star of the film, Margot Robbie. Here's everything you need to know about the live-action Barbie movie.

At first, Diablo Cody was set to be the writer of the film and Amy Schumer to play the lead role, but unfortunately, they were met with some difficulties. "I never even produced an initial draft. I failed so hard at that project. I was literally incapable of writing a Barbie script. God knows I tried," Cody admitted back in 2018. And she wasn't the only one who had problems. Schumer had dropped out of the movie after facing schedule difficulties. But as it was later revealed by the comedian herself, it may have been related to other things. "They definitely didn't want to do it the way I wanted to do it, the only way I was interested in doing it."

So in her place, they cast Robbie, who will be co-starring with Ryan Gosling as Ken, Barbie's boyfriend. During an interview with Vogue in 2021, the actress confessed that playing the character "comes with a lot of baggage" and "a lot of nostalgic connections." Robbie added, "But with that come[s] a lot of exciting ways to attack it," she said. "People generally hear Barbie and think, 'I know what that movie is going to be,' and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they're like, 'Oh, well, maybe I don't.'" Gerwig has famously written the script for Lady Bird, Little Woman, and more.

In more recent news, Sex Education star Emma Mackey was announced to be joining the cast in April. Ironically, the actress has been said to be a doppelganger for Robbie. But Mackey will be playing the role of the CEO of the company that invented Barbie - which may or may not be an ode to Mattell, the real toy company. Either way, we can't wait to see what this movie has in store for us. Especially since there are many unknown facts about Barbie herself, who knows what the live-action adventure will include! Stay tuned.
