Season 2 of Mindy Kaling's Never Have I Ever premiered on July 15th, and it's the coming-of-age content we never knew we needed. Lucky for us, the creator recently sat down to talk about the inspiration behind the latest season. And that's not all - Mindy also teased us with some Legally Blonde 3 deets. Here's everything you need to know.
If you haven't yet, we recommend you binge-watch Never Have I Ever's latest batch of episodes ASAP. It had us feeling all the feels and falling even more in love with the funny teens of the Los Angeles high school. Season 2 shows our girl Devi as she balances not one but two boyfs. And it seems like things couldn't get better for the protagonist. And then...
Devi's world is flipped when another Indian-American teen moves into town. The thought-provoking season turned out to be everything we wanted and then some. So what does the creator/executive producer have to say about it? "I really wanted to create like an original character with like original stories, but of course, that had some relation to some parts of my childhood," Mindy explained.
"And I think a lot of her personality and her sense of injustice, like Devi has a real sense of, 'I deserve this,' and that really rings true to me," Kaling said before getting into the nitty-gritty of Season 2. "We were really interested when we were writing it, about this idea that when you enter a room as a person of color, you often have this feeling that you're like, 'It can only be one of us,' and that fear that you'll be replaced."
Kaling added, "So that was, I think, super relatable to people, and I'd never seen a story like that." And working on a first-of-its-kind plot isn't the only thing that's kept Mindy busy in the last year. The talented comedian is also writing Legally Blonde 3, the highly-anticipated sequel to the iconic pop culture classic that will star Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods once more.
"I'm having a great time writing it," she shared. "It is the most corporate gig I've ever had, so I literally can't talk about it at all, but I hope we do a good job." We can't wait to see what magic the 42-year-old brings to our screens. Until then, we'll busy ourselves with these 29+ Untold Secrets from the 2001 film. And, let's be honest, we'll probably rewatch Never Have I Ever.
