It feels like just yesterday we were falling in love with Ncuti Gatwa and his one-of-a-kind sense of humor on Sex Education. And from the time since the show first hit Netflix back in 2019, Gatwa has been launched to mega-star status thanks to his role as Eric Effiong. But, if you're like us, three seasons just isn't enough Ncuti - and lucky for us, we have something new to look forward to!
The 29-year-old actor landed a brand new role as the lead in the legendary British sci-fi television show Doctor Who. He will be the 14th actor to be honored with the important role, with a decades-long legacy to live up to. TBH, these are some pretty big shoes to fill, but the sassy actor couldn't be more excited about the opportunity. "It feels really amazing," he shared during an interview with BBC News. "It's a true honor. This role is an institution, and it's so iconic." Having run on television for so long, Doctor Who has amassed a fan base that stretches generations, with many people having grown up with the program throughout their whole life. "[It] means a lot to so many people, including myself," Gatwa gushed about the new acting gig. "I feel very grateful to have had the baton handed over, and I'm going to try to do my best."
The new interpretation of the series is set to drop some time in 2023, but luckily, with the news having dropped, we can hopefully look forward to more updates about Ncuti's show. And it seems we're not the only ones excited! When asked about how the legendary actor snagged the role, a Doctor Who showrunner spilled the tea, saying, "It was our very last audition... We thought we had someone, and then he came and stole it." He then added, "I'm properly, properly thrilled. It's going to be a blazing future." And if that's not enough to get you pumped, then we don't know what will!
