When it comes to Hollywood casting, us fans are typically waiting to hear what big names have been slotted for upcoming roles. It's usually an exciting element of the production process that builds hype for upcoming releases, but on the other side of the camera, there's a harsh reality facing some actors in the game. And one actress isn't afraid to speak her mind about it...
A season one regular in Netflix's Stranger Things and guest star in Riverdale, Shannon Purser is a beloved actress for millennial television fans. Her role, Barb, quickly became a fan favorite, and many were sad to not see her return in subsequent episodes. But despite the positive experience in the hit show, that doesn't mean that things are all sunshine and rainbows for Shannon. The actress took to Twitter to share her thoughts on a Hollywood practice that impacts her life - and the lives of many others in the industry - that she thinks should change: casting practices. According to the 25-year-old actress, unless things change, certain people will continue to be left out. Here's what she had to say...
"They're not hiring fat actors for iconic fat characters because they want a big name star," the actress explained in her tweet. "There are almost no fat big-name stars because fat actors aren't allowed upward mobility. We aren't allowed upward mobility because the industry sees us as two-dimensional set pieces." Need an example of what Shannon was venting about? Many are pointing to Emma Thompson's upcoming role in Matilda, where she's seen wearing a fat suit in the trailer. Other users noted Sarah Paulson in Impeachment: American Crime Story as a further example. And according to Shannon, the list could go on and on.
