The time has come to say goodbye to the Wildcats! The fourth and final season is just around the corner, and we have all the juicy deets. To give fans a heads-up, showrunner Tim Federle and Disney+ announced that the series will end after Season 4, which will be released on August 9. But don't get too sad, because the entire eight-episode season will drop at once for fans to binge-watch!
“This series was always about found family, and about making something you love with people you love. In other words, it was a tribute to theater kids,” said Federle. “I can’t wait for our dedicated fan base to watch this world-class cast take a final bow.” Federle also shared an Instagram post where he revealed that this would be the show's final, endgame season. “This show brought the most extraordinary cast — and crew, and collaborators — to my life. To the fans who embraced our super-meta series, we ‘don’t not love you,'” he wrote.
As for the plot, Season 4 sees the East High Wildcats returning to school for their senior year after spending Season 3 at theater camp. They are prepping a stage production of High School Musical 3: Senior Year, but their plans are disrupted when Disney announces that they will shoot High School Musical 4: The Reunion movie on location at their beloved high school. (Don't worry; this movie only exists within the world of the show.) Original HSM cast members Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed, and Kaycee Stroh are set to return and play themselves as they get back into character for the movie-within-the-show, while the high school students play featured extras.

The show stars Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, Dara Reneé, Julia Lester, Frankie Rodriguez, Kate Reinders, and Liamani Segura. Plus, there are also recurring guest stars Kylie Cantrall, Matthew Sato, Caitlin Reilly, and Vasthy Mompoint, along with Mark St. Cyr, Matt Cornett, Larry Saperstein, Joe Serafini, Adrian Lyles, and Saylor Bell Curda. Although this may be the end for High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, don't despair because Federle isn't going anywhere. He has an overall deal with Disney Branded Television, so who knows what new shows he'll have for us in the future!
