Director and producer Luca Guadagnino is certainly going all out to guarantee the success of his upcoming romantic drama film, Challengers. Joining the cast, along with the talented Euphoria star Zendaya, are The Crown's Josh Conner and West Side Story star Mike Faist. Here's what fans can expect to see in the upcoming adventure.
The drama tells the story of a tennis-player-turned-coach named Tashi, whose husband, Art, is a rather mediocre player of the sport. She decides to coach her husband and turn him into a world-famous tennis champion. But, as the movie's title suggests, things become challenging when Art loses a streak. To help her husband bounce back from his recent losing streak, Tashi makes him enter a "Challenger" tournament in which the level of competition is close to the lowest on the pro tour. Drama ensues when he soon realizes he's up against Patrick, Tashi's ex-boyfriend and his former best friend. And, well, one can only imagine how that would play out on (and off) the court!
Although it looks like the project won't start until March, director Luca Guadagnino has been busy putting it together since 2021. Zendaya was the first to be cast for the film and is set to play the role of Tashi. The Euphoria beauty will also be one of the movie's producers, working alongside Guadagnino and Amy Pascal! Zendaya will be joined by Josh O'Conner, who's famous for his time as young Prince Charles in Netflix's The Crown. O'Conner is set to take on the role of Patrick, and Mike Faist will portray Tashi's husband, Art.

It looks like Guadagnino, who has received multiple accolades for directing and producing Call Me by Your Name (2017), has quite a lot on his plate this year. In addition to Challengers, the filmmaker is also currently working on the post-production of his next movie, Bones & All. The film is set to feature Zendaya's Dune co-star, Timotheé Chalamet, who was also in the cast of Guadagnino's Call Me By Your Name. As for Zendaya - well, her time in HBO's Euphoria is far from over. But not only will she be returning for a third season, but she will also star in Denis Villeneuve's Dune: Part Two, which is set to begin filming in 2022. And although we still don't have a premiere date for Challengers, we're sure fans are just as excited as we are! Until then, stay tuned.
