While some gals spend their whole lives trying to become fashion's new it-girl, Aoi Yamada has done just that - and she's only 21 years old! The iconic fashionista sat down with Vogue to share her story and talk about what inspires her to express herself through fashion. Here's the full scoop.
The millennial muse is based in Tokyo, Japan, and describes herself as a "dancer, model, and expresser." And while dancing and creativity have been a core part of her life since she was just a little kid, it's safe to say that few could have imagined just how far it would take her. From projects with Stella McCartney to solo performances during the 2020 Olympic Games closing ceremony in Tokyo, this up-and-coming star has taken the world by storm and has no plans on stopping soon. "I enjoyed wearing my favorite clothes and dancing with my favorite music," Yamada recalled of her creative childhood during the interview. "I gathered up [my mother's] clothes, coordinated them, and took a picture of it in the middle of the rice field in front of her house." And what started as child curiosity grew into something much bigger. "The colors and combinations I saw when I was little, I feel that it is unconsciously affecting the present," she explained.
According to the young creative, fashion allows her to "put her soul in a container called Aoi Yamada" and capture the buzzing ideas that swarm around her head all day. And it seems that people just can't stop looking at her creations. With over 30 thousand followers on Instagram and steadily climbing, it appears as though this young Japanese artist is the next big thing breaking into the fashion scene. And with New York fashion week right around the corner, we can't wait to see what other projects Aoi brings her inspiration and personal touch to!
