Everyone has a different personality, so understandably, everyone has a different style. However, defining what your personal style is can be extremely daunting. Where does one even begin? Don’t worry, celebrity stylist Molly Dickson has your back. Here are her tips on how to define your personal style.
The first thing she does with her celeb clients - which include Sadie Sink, Sydney Sweeney, and Addison Rae - is ask them to make a mood board. She told Harper’s Bazaar, “I ask them to go on Pinterest or Instagram or look through a magazine and pull images of anything they think is cool and we will come up with a mood board.” This helps to visualize your style goals. The next step is to make your dreams a reality, which can include loads of research. Dickson suggests that once you find an outfit you like on Instagram or another source, try to source the outfit. The third tip is to remember quality over quantity. She told the magazine, “As I have gotten older and the more I have worked in fashion, I have realized it’s all about quality over quantity.” For example, skip the fast fashion places and invest in the nicer pieces! She also suggests checking out sustainable options, like vintage stores and secondhand websites.
Also, there’s no need to feel pressure to try out every trend just because it’s trendy. Dickson mentioned, “I think when you’re in your late teens and early 20’s, you try to follow all the trends but the older you get the more you realize that trend doesn’t work for me. Maybe you think ‘I am not going to get those super high platforms because I know I won’t be able to walk.’” It makes sense to us! Another thing to remember is that it takes trial and error to figure out your style, and you never have to stick to just one lane. You can mix and match different moods and style ideas, bringing elements together that no one else would. That’s what defines you. Lastly, her final tip was to make sure that you always have a good tailor and a good set of undergarments. The base of an outfit matters just as much as the outfit itself, and a good bra, Spanx, or underwear can make or break a look. She also remarked, “Tailoring is the most important thing.”
