It's now official: the Y2K style that first emerged in the early 2000s has been fully revived and welcomed into 2023. Fashion has truly embraced underwear as one of the most popular trends of the year, showcased in a variety of ways.
Last year we saw the resurgence of the whale tail trend, an eye-catching '90s style featuring exposed thongs on celebrities such as Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian - sparking what was dubbed as 'the revival of all revivals.' From there it was only inevitable that sheer dresses would remain a mainstay trend through 2021 too, seen frequently on our favorite A-listers such as Olivia Culpo, Hailey Bieber and Kendall Jenner. In order to keep up with the momentum, pantsless fashion took center stage throughout Spring/Summer 2023 with celebrities like Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Florence Pugh leading the way. Major labels such as Bottega Veneta, Coperni and Tom Ford made their own mark by incorporating pantless looks into their runway shows. And now? - A variant of this daring style is being explored: peekaboo!
The peekaboo underwear trend is much more inclusive than its whale tail predecessor allowing us to choose from any type of underwear - whether it be boxers, briefs, or thongs - while maintaining just a sliver of visibility due to how high (or low!) you decide to wear them. This look first emerged alongside other underwear-as-outerwear trends during early 2000s fashion - but this time round, it's been given something of a modern makeover for 2023 - seen on major runways by Miu Miu and Gucci, who teased viewers with just top trimmings visible above waistbands; whereas other designers such as Yuhan Wang and Ester Manas opted for showing off slightly more skin with high-waisted lacy briefs finally Rick Owens found that perfect balance between pantless and peekaboo showcasing floor length asymmetrical tops complete with black underwear elegantly revealed underneath!
