Waking up without dry and frizzy hair is a fantasy most of us dream of. But the truth is, very few people can enjoy having a head full of shiny locks without taking the time to give it proper nourishment to replenish its moisture. Fortunately, we've found a few simple homemade hair treatments that can help keep your hair soft and smooth.
For those who have thick hair, avocado is your best friend. According to Jennifer Matos, a stylist at Rita Hazan, the perfect mask for this type of hair is a combination of avocado, honey, and coconut oil. "Avocados are a great source of biotin, potassium, and magnesium, which help seal cuticle cells, prevent breakage, and the hair will look smooth and shiny," she explains. After mixing in the ingredients together, let the mask sit for 10-15 before rinsing it off. "This type of mask can be applied once a week before shampooing your hair," Matos shared.
But for those who don't have all the ingredients for the avocado mask, just a few spoons of coconut oil can also do the trick! Rub a small amount of the oil between your hands and apply it to the ends of the hair and leave it on as long as you like. But be careful not to get too close to the roots - too much coconut oil can be a pain to rinse out! If your hair is really dry, another option is to leave the coconut oil in overnight to get as much moisture as possible into the ends.
But our list isn't complete without the final ingredient that can completely change the way you moisturize your hair. Bananas are well-known for the wonders they can do on the skin. But did you know they also make excellent hair masks? Combined with olive oil, a pureed banana can leave your hair feeling unrecognizably soft. Mix a mashed banana with one tablespoon of olive oil to form a smoothie-like texture (careful not to leave in any banana chunks!). Then massage the mixture into your hair and scalp, and rinse it off after 30 minutes before shampooing. If you find yourself dealing with hair that's hard to style, make sure to give these natural DIY hair masks a shot!
