Don't freak out, but after a one-year hiatus, the Met Gala has finally announced its return. The best part? We've got details for 2021 and 2022. Read on for all of the info, plus some of the best looks from our favorite celebs.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual fashion celebration was canceled last year due to you-know-what. But now they've released deets on the next two events, and - spoiler alert - they're coming back hotter than ever. The first return will occur on September 13, 2021, while the second night will see a return to its usual schedule and take place the first Monday in May - the 22nd - in 2022. But most importantly, what are the themes?!
The 2021 gala will open in the Anna Wintour Costume Center and is titled In America: A Lexicon of Fashion, revolving around a fictional American house where examples of 20th and 21st-century fashion will fill each room. "Designs by pioneers of American sportswear will be displayed alongside works by a diverse group of contemporary designers," according to the press release. "To illustrate a shifting emphasis in American fashion defined by feelings of fear, delight, comfort, anxiety, well-being, loneliness, happiness, belonging, self-reflection, and self-representation among other qualities."
The 2022 exhibit will delve further into American culture. In America: An Anthology of Fashion will feature "Women's and men's historical and contemporary dress dating from 18th century to the present in vignettes installed in select period rooms... The interiors present a survey of more than 300 years of American domestic life and tell a variety of stories - from the personal to the political, the stylistic to the cultural, and the aesthetic to the ideological."
The press release continues; "The exhibition will reflect on these narratives through a series of three-dimensional cinematic 'freeze frames' produced in collaboration with notable American film directors. These mise-en-scènes will explore the role of dress in shaping American identity and address the complex and layered histories of the rooms." It's no secret that the world-renowned affair has given us some of the most iconic fashion moments: from the Kardashians owning the carpet in their beads and feathers to Zendaya rocking this silver armor inspired by Saint Joan of Arc.
But possibly one of our favorite looks of all time is Cardi B embodying 2018's theme of Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination. From the stunning headpiece to her beautiful baby bump, this look is to die for. We can't wait to see what killer looks these Hollywood stars serve this year.
